From morning dress to lounge suits, every race has its own dress code. Royal Ascot has a different dress code for each enclosure, so it is important to make sure you know the rules and look the part.

What is Royal Ascot?

Ascot is one of Britain’s most recognised racecourses, and every year a week of races is held in June called Royal Ascot. Over a five-day period, 300,000 people dress up in their finest clothes and hats to watch the horse racing. The prestigious event, attended by the Royal Family, is filled with tradition right down to the dress code, so we have created a guide to help you choose the perfect Royal Ascot suit.

In 2012, Royal Ascot introduced a stricter, more formal dress code, particularly for those with tickets to the Royal Enclosure and the Queen Anne Enclosure.

Ascot Dress Code: Royal Enclosure

The most formal of the enclosures, the Royal Enclosure requires full morning dress in black, grey, or navy. A waistcoat and tie (not a cravat) must be worn, along with a black or grey top hat. Keep colours simple, but consider a double-breasted waistcoat in a lighter tone for contrast. Black dress shoes with socks covering the ankle are mandatory.

Ascot Dress Code: Queen Anne Enclosure

The Queen Anne Enclosure gives access to the Grandstand and surrounding lawns. The dress code relaxes slightly. Many men still opt for morning dress, but it is acceptable to wear a matching two or three-piece suit with a collared shirt, tie, and smart shoes with socks covering the ankle. There are no restrictions on colour, so while your Royal Ascot suit should remain smart, there is more room to express personal style.

Ascot Dress Code: Village Enclosure

The Village Enclosure offers trackside views with a less formal dress code. A suit jacket, full-length trousers, and a collared shirt with a tie are required. Socks must cover the ankle, and trainers or jeans are not permitted. Your jacket and trousers do not have to match, allowing for a more creative approach.

Ascot Dress Code: Windsor Enclosure

The Windsor Enclosure has a more relaxed atmosphere, with many racegoers enjoying picnics on the lawns. While there is no official dress code, guests are encouraged to keep things smart with a jacket and collared shirt.
