Mens Smart Suit Jackets

Strictly speaking, a suit jacket is only so if worn with the matching trousers. However, in modern day fashion it has become the norm to wear a suit jacket on its own, partnered with more casual trousers or even jeans. This could be down to the rise in popularity of the sports jacket. Though it features a similar length and cut to the classic suit jacket, the sports jacket (otherwise known as a sports coat) is a less formal garment, purposely designed to be worn as a standalone item without matching trousers. Traditionally the sports jacket was developed to be worn at sporting events, hence the name, such as shooting or hunting, but it quickly became a part of mainstream men's fashion. Due to its similarities to the suit jacket, the two now go hand in hand as the smart casual man’s essential but there are a few things to take into consideration when deciding if your suit jacket is suitable to be worn on its own.

Firstly, check what fabric your suit jacket is made from. It would be difficult to dress down a formal fabric such as worsted wool, but easy to pair a tweed or linen material with a pair of chinos or jeans. Also consider the pattern of your suit. Patterns with texture in them such as checks and tartans are easier to dress down with contrasting trousers, whereas flat colours and pinstripes have a harsher, more formal appearance that lends itself better to a full suit. Whether it’s a jacket for a suit you’re after, or one to wear on its own, browse our extensive collection above to find the right fit for you. Don’t forget to check out our range of smart and casual trousers to go with your new jacket, depending on the occasion of course.
