How to Dress For a Black Tie Invitation

When you receive an invite for a formal event such as a charity ball or an awards dinner, with the stipulation of black tie or black formalwear as the dress code, it's best to read up on the rules, so you don't get caught out on the night. We've created an in-depth style advice page, specifically for the black tie dress code, if you need some ideas on how to accessorise your outfit, but if you're pushed for time, we can cover the basics here.

Black tie is a dress code that requires a tuxedo or dinner jacket with, typically matching trousers, a bow tie and a dress shirt. You will also be required to wear polished patent leather shoe and, traditionally, a cummerbund. You are usually expected to wear a black bow tie, to match your lapels, and the trouser stripe, however modern day twists on the dress code would allow a black dress tie.The trousers shouldn't be the standard black wear suit trousers. Tuxedo trousers don't include belt loops, exposed buttons, turn ups, and have a satin stripe continuing down the outside of the leg.

You can stylise your outfit in a number of ways, starting with the dinner jacket. If you would rather choose a contrasting colour, the jacket choice can be a pop colour, although most men choose a more subtle approach of dark navy blue, or silver tuxedo jacket. The dress shirt should be double cuffed, so that you can add some eye catching cufflinks to go with the stud buttons exposed on the front of your shirt. To finish off the outfit there is no better choice than a black silk scarf to add some class to the look, and at a relatively inexpensive cost. Include all of these tips, and your tuxedo will be the perfect black tie dressed suit.
