A dress shirt is as important as the tuxedo you’ve chosen to wear to your prestigious black tie event. Your dress shirt completes the formal attire expected at such a function, and is designed in a certain way, for a purpose. Unlike the regular casual shirt you’ve worn for years, the dress shirt has either concealed buttons in a plain front, or a stud button front. The reason for this follows on from the tuxedos rule of masking all the workings and fittings of the outfit, including buttons, seams and stitching. The stud buttons are often plain, with a glossy inlay. They were originally designed due to the stiff starched fronts of dress shirts, which were far too tough for the regular button to be used to fasten the shirt front.
British society refers to a dress shirt as an ivory or Marcella white, shirt to be worn at formal engagements such as black tie, white tie events, and dinner-dances. The traditional detachable stiff winged collar has fallen out of fashion over the past few decades, with gentlemen preferring the modern day dress shirts, due to their ease of use. We stock both the stud button holed shirts, and plain fronted options, dependant on your tastes. The stud buttons can be matched to your bow tie or cummerbund colours, or chosen to act in contrast to your attire accessories.
Making sure you feel comfortable in your tuxedo is as important as feeling relaxed and confident in your dress shirt underneath, if you are to truly enjoy your black tie event. Ensuring you feel comfortable in tuxedo, and the tuxedo shirt underneath, whilst attending your black tie event is of course, as important as feeling confident in your actual appearance. We recommend taking the time to carefully re-measure yourself, before ordering any of our items, but in particular our dress shirts, (and comparing your measurements against our sizing guide) so that your dress shirt fits snugly enough to look stylish and sleek, but still allowing enough room to breathe freely!
If your dress shirt is ordered in too small and tight a size, the button holes can be left gaping, and cutting into your shoulder blade when ever you go to raise your arms. If your shirt is too big, and the shirt can mushroom or billow out over the top of the tuxedo trousers. You can disguise this to some degree with your cummerbund, but it can only do so much. Fret not, however, if your shirt does not fit correctly, then we will be happy to swap it for one that suits better, if returned to us within 28 days.
